Kazakh Baskur Band
Mangystau region
Ornament & symbolism
The baskur is a long woven band that wrapped and braced the wooden frame of the yurt. Its tight warp-faced stripes carry small horn and star motifs along their length.
TermeTerme — A warp-faced patterned weave: the design is carried by the warp threads, producing crisp narrow bands often joined into runners.FlatweaveFlatweave — A pileless rug woven by interlacing warp and weft. Lighter and thinner than a knotted carpet; the pattern is the same on both faces.
History
Structural and decorative at once, baskur bands held the yurt together and dressed its interior seam. Today they are prized as natural runners.
