Ornament & symbolism

Concentric stepped diamonds climb the field like terraced fields on a mountainside. Hooks at the edges are protective; the colour comes from local madder and walnut.

KilimKilimA flatwoven, pileless rug built from geometric blocks of colour. Reversible and well suited to layering.FlatweaveFlatweaveA pileless rug woven by interlacing warp and weft. Lighter and thinner than a knotted carpet; the pattern is the same on both faces.

History

High in Badakhshan, kilims were woven for the home and for dowries on simple horizontal looms. The geometry is pared down and architectural, shaped by the loom and the mountains.

Suits these interiors

Flat, durable and graphic — an easy-living kilim for a dining room or hallway, happy to be layered or walked on daily.
