Ornament & symbolism

Suzani rosettes and vines — pomegranates for fertility, the sun-disc for life — are translated here from embroidery into flatweave. A bright, optimistic, dowry-bright field.

SuzaniSuzaniA large floral motif from Uzbek embroidery — rosettes, vines and pomegranates scattered across the field. A symbol of fertility and good fortune.FlatweaveFlatweaveA pileless rug woven by interlacing warp and weft. Lighter and thinner than a knotted carpet; the pattern is the same on both faces.KilimKilimA flatwoven, pileless rug built from geometric blocks of colour. Reversible and well suited to layering.

History

Suzani panels were embroidered by brides and their families as part of a dowry. This flatwoven cotton version brings the same blossoming motifs to the floor.
