Uzbek Julkhyrs Long-Pile
Surxondaryo region
Ornament & symbolism
Julkhyrs means 'bear's fur' — a deliberately shaggy, long-pile rug woven in narrow strips and sewn together. The loose, painterly bands of colour feel almost abstract-expressionist.
Pile weavePile weave — A knotted carpet: short tufts of wool or silk are knotted onto the warp and trimmed, giving a soft, dense, hard-wearing surface.
History
Woven in long strips on narrow nomadic looms and then joined, julkhyrs were warm sleeping rugs. Their loose pile and improvised colour have made them favourites of modern collectors.
Suits these interiors
Texture-first and bohemian — lovely as a runner beside a bed or layered over a flat rug in a relaxed, collected-over-time room.
